Canada D'eh?

One aspect we want to showcase on this blog is our fun and themed ideas we have that ties our friendship so closely. In honour of Canada turning 148 this year, we want to share a little cheery shoot we did at Hawrelak Park, in time for Canada Day!

Ann and Sarah are strutting their friendship today as they embrace the great outdoors, the iconic maple leaf, and even pops of Canadian spirit. Symbolic elements in each of their outfits adds to the theme without screaming patriotism left and right.

Ann is wearing a gingham (super hot print this summer!) blouse, and the petite cherries on her pants give way to the signature red and white colours. (Refer to the link on making this Burda wrap blouse yourself.) It's not noticeable at first, but Sarah's top has mini maple leafs all over it to tie in with the Canadian foliage in the neighbouring family of pinks.

It goes to show that dressing for a particular event doesn't have to be blatantly obvious; it's all in the detail that counts! Plus, when someone notices, it makes it even more special that they realized the thought one puts into their attire.

To add a free spirited vibe, Carmen drew some whimsical leaves on our cheeks while our props brought out our inner child at heart. If you are looking for some unique items, Dollartree has some typical and some not so ordinary products to have fun with.

There's so many things to do this Canada Day, even a FIFA Women's World Cup semi-finals match to catch if you're into soccer (Japan vs. England at 5pm). Here are our top 4 Meraki picks:

1. Having an outdoor picnic around dinner time at the Alberta Legislative Grounds, then chill until the sun sets, the High Level bridge lights up, and the fireworks begin. (Sarah)

2. Have a baking day with friends and make red macarons with a delicious cream filling! Then of course-eating them as part of the celebration. (Carmen)

3. Embracing our country's diverse heritage and checking this night market out! (Ann)

4. BBQ-ing it up and enjoying the fireworks along with friends and family! Stephanie)

We hope you enjoy these photos and have a joyous Canada Day! Thanks to Carmen for her artistic makeup skills and for taking these photos.

Flavour & Fun In Every Step

For as long as I can remember, I love markets. Indoor markets, outdoor markets, night markets, farmer's market, you name it and I will be there. There's such a sense of community when small businesses and local makers from the city come together to not only sell their creations, but share their passion and love for what they do.
Last week I got to go the 124 Street Grand Market for the very first time while catching up with a friend. It happens between May and October and is only from 4-8pm every Thursday. Though the market is quite small compared to its weekend counterparts around town, I thoroughly enjoyed the intimate atmosphere filled with food trucks, performances, and live musicians in the heart of this neighbourhood. Usually I browse more than I buy, but as it was dinner time, my taste buds were left delectably satisfied.

I was most excited for Moonshine Doughnuts as there's been so much #yeg buzz around them. Unconventionally dense, yet moist doughnuts with a unique glaze, each box is $10 and comes with one each of their exclusive weekly flavours. Featured this past week was (clockwise from top left): Beer Chocolate with Pretzels and Irish Cream, Cherry Lemonade, Almond Earl Grey, and Hibiscus Birthday Cake. As a tea lover, the Almond Earl Grey was definitely a stand out and you can bet these doughnuts didn't last that long. Besides, they're made fresh, so they should be eaten as quickly as possibly right?!
So if you caught on, yes I did have dessert first, but how can I not when everything tends to sell out the later it gets? This was the case with the food trucks. Initially I wanted a savoury quiche, but ended up with a classic chicken pot pie from Meat St Pies. A decent size for a bite on the go, but surprisingly, the phyllo pastry was soft (I thought it would be dry from sitting in the truck's display case) and the filling was warm with creamy chicken pieces- though I would try something else next time for $6.
Next up my friend and I shared this burrito filled with sesame ginger grilled pork, Korean chili fried rice, black beans, melted cheddar, and an in house relish from Orbit. It didn't sound that intriguing at first, but upon seeing someone eat it, we were sold. For $9, this burrito was a great portion to share and as far as food truck standards go, it was well presented and loaded with quality ingredients. The chili gave it a good kick and the fusion of ingredients was amazing! Definitely would have this again.
And the winner of the night for me was this slow roasted lamb with little lemon potatoes and tzatziki sauce from Little Village. The potatoes were quite greasy from the oil (and possibly drippings from the lamb I hope), but as a lamb lover, this dish was worth every penny. It tasted like it could've been served up at a restaurant, and for $9.5 it was a steal. The meat was juicy and flavourful and paired with the tzatziki made for a great tangy combination along with the side of potatoes. I'm craving this as I write! Yikes!
All in all, it was a pleasurable evening over cheery atmosphere, random entertainment (this couple was doing quick Shakespeare renditions), and yummy in my tummy food. A great event for a hangout with friends, quality family time, a date night, and even just a solo stroll to soak it all up.

I hope you enjoyed this post and getting to know the local foodie in me as well. What are your favourite part of farmer markets?

Happy weekend ahead!

Ear cuffs!

Hello beautifuls!

Here's my first ever post on this blog, so I thought I'd show you guys one of my favorite accessories. I pretty much wear them on my ears whenever I want to dress up or down a look. I really admire how many girls (and guys) can wear earrings, and I think earrings can totally change up your overall look! I am personally allergic to metal (yes, unfortunately I am allergic to gold as well =[...), so therefore I can not and do not have any piercings. I've had 4 previous piercings before, but my body has rejected all 4 times I've tried, and caused my ear to swell up twice it's size.

I've also previously tried clip-on earrings and magnetic ones as well, but oh my goodness...I can not stand them after an hour of wear. They pinch my ears and was causing too much pain! I then came across these ear accessories in Asia and it's safe to say, they're my favorite piece of jewelry after bracelets! I mostly wear these ear pieces when I tie my hair up and I can guarantee they don't pinch or hurt your ears at all and are super easy to put on! My recent favorite is the bow piece and also the snowflake piece. Which one do you like best? Feel free to show me your favorite earrings so I can admire over them!

We Made These Memories For Ourselves

Hello blogging world! I'm so stoked for what's to come this summer after all the fun I've had this past week! Last week I celebrated my birthday and even though I'm not so into getting older, I think it's a good excuse to treat yourself; like maybe see a live concert...or two? Well yeah that's just gives you an idea of how I party. I was lucky enough to see Imagine Dragons and Ed Sheeran. Excuse the poor quality of photos as my phone failed to capture the awesomeness.

With all the excitement I've had this week, I felt overjoyed with emotions. Which is why I was inspired by this video to share 15 of my favourite feelings. So here we go:

1. The anticipation of the opening song at a concert and listening to the album when you get home to relive all the greatness

2. Opening a beauty subscription box full of wonderful surprises

3. Crying of laughter while watching a YouTube video

4. Having freshly painted nails

5. Waking up early to work out and having a full day ahead of you

6. Reminiscing on last years travel adventures

7. The smell of freshly steeped tea

8. You're favourite TV characters finally becoming a couple and share the ultimate cute moments for the rest of the season

9. Finding someone else is thinking or feeling the exact same way as you do

10. Looking back at what you have accomplished and knowing you have done well

11. Finishing an exam and being so glad you completed it that you don't even care about how you did

12. Hearing someone thank you for your efforts

13. Getting so caught up in a book you will not put it down till you find out what happened

14. Exploring the streets of London

15. Having something turn out ten times better than you had expected

I have a super exciting vacation lined up for next month, along with a couple more concerts that I can't wait to share with you all! What are some of your favourite feelings and what are you going to get up to this summer?

Connect With Us

We welcome you to Meraki Connexion! We are four human ecology alums with a zealous and growing desire to showcase our skill sets, gifts, and knowledge - ready to take on the fashion world. With humble intentions, we are initiating this to fuel our creativity whereby we are able to share something of value with each other and our community. It’s a connexion deriving from the heart of meraki – of soul, love, and of passion. We dream big, strive to make a positive difference, and are four unique individuals with a common goal to uplift each other’s talents.

Instead of waiting for an opportunity, we are creating ours. It is one that is for us and for others to experience a “meraki” moment in all of our lives. With our passion, creativity, and friendship we bring forward a blog to develop a connection with others that transcends our own interests. Join us as we venture into fashion, photography, design, and other projects while having fun!

ANN
Don’t be fooled by my small stature and bubbly face, you’re going to hear this lady roar. Eventually. Currently a budding fashion designer (although Kim Kardashian preferred Sid Neigum’s entry), I’m for the quirky, the whimsical, and strangely delightful. Although I adore the creativity found in fashion design, the tawdry and even destructive glamour of the industry leaves much to be desired. My intention is to pursue my talents and my need to create in the spirit of humility and graciousness. I see the future of our local fashion industry as being a robust community that is built upon mutual encouragement, support, and sustainability. Also, I have penchant for tea, macarons, and great novels.

CARMEN
I've always had a strong passion in health and wellness, fitness, art, design, photography, fashion, hair, and makeup in one package. My faith holds firmly with Christ, and I believe that beauty or attractiveness is never based on wearing provocative and revealing attire (1 Peter 3:3). With that being said, I love the joy of reaching out to women to help them find, appreciate and respect the inner and outer beauty they are already blessed with. I am a certified freelance makeup artist, and I currently run a personal beauty blog, and was previously one of the duo from the Edmonton-based fashion and style blog The Androgyne-us, so some of you may actually already be familiar with me. If you love art, makeup, or animals, we already have something in common.

SARAH
With a heart for celebrating life’s glorious moments, two or three people are enough for me to get my party planning engine started. A self-proclaimed trendy mall rat by day (I work behind the scenes at a mall), I am a creative idea machine for all things fashion, events, and adventurous! With a driven entrepreneurial mind and retail background, I hope to merge these passions of mine with a desire to serve others, bring awareness to social injustices, and demonstrate that you can be ambitious, yet remain humble from the momentary drives of the world. Oh! I also love to travel, learn about new cultures, and get inspired by the world as captured by my travel blog Phollow Me There.

STEPHANIE
I'm that girl who is inspired by all things social media and celeb-related. There is nothing more exciting to me than spending hours on Pinterest, watching YouTube, or reading blogs. When I'm not working at my retail job, my life consists of ballet barre classes, expanding my wardrobe, and knowing too much about One Direction. You'll rarely find me in anything but leggings and I dream of traveling the world to adventure for days on days. I hope for this blog to be a place where I can chronicle my life events, and build greater relationships along the way. No matter what someone tells you, shopping is always a good idea.

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to connect with us. Here's to the start of something new!
